Ex: Out of her group of 20, Mme Careen has 4 yellow Fruity Os. What percentage of Fruity Os are yellow?
The ratio of yellow Fruity Os to ALL of the Fruity Os is 4 : 20.
In order to find the percentage of yellow Fruity Os, we need to find an equivalent ratio (fraction) over 100.
4 : 20 = 20 : 100.
(We found the equivalent ratio by multiplying by 5).
This means that 20% of the Fruity Os are yellow!

Fruity Os!
Happy Thursday!
This morning in Math we continued learning about ratios (les rapports). Ratios are a comparison of quantities. We use ratios almost every day, especially in the kitchen! We see ratios when we mix frozen orange juice, cook rice and bake a cake! Specific ratios ensure of juice won't be watered down, our rice won't be too mushy and our cake won't be dry!
And, because there's no better way to kick off a new Math concept than with a sugary cereal treat, we opened up a box of Fruity Os to practice our ratio-writing skills!
We each got a small cup of Fruity Os and counted out 20. We then worked to answer specific questions comparing one colour of "O" to another. Mme Careen tried to trick us by asking us to write a ratio of how many BLUE Fruity Os we had. Silly Mme! There is no such thing as blue Fruity Os! :)
Our next step - which we will continue working on tomorrow - will be to find the percentage of each colour represented in our group of 20 Fruity Os. Because percents are fractions over 100 (and not over 20 like the fractions we had written), we'll have a bit of Math thinking to do!

Wednesday!
Hello, friends of learning!
We're already half way through the week and we've busy learning so many things in Math, Science and Français.
In Math this morning we got our brains working with some picture algebra puzzles, like this one:
We learned that we have to pay close attention to the images, as sometimes small details will be changed which will in turn affect the answer. (Notice the amount of petals on the blue flower in the final expression as compared to the second and third lines, for example). These types of puzzles let us practice our basic mental math skills and allow as to apply concepts previously learned in class, such as PEDMAS.
In Français today, we were treated to many wonderful CFOO presentations. This week's theme was "Les opinions," so we heard critiques about many different websites, restaurants and stores. We also learned a bit more about our classmates who presented "On s'explique" - a presentation that involves sharing your favourites of things from a list of provided categories.
Finally, in Science, we predicted and discussed whether or not sand and rice are considered solids or fluids.
We saw that a group of sand or rice grains can take the shape of its container and can flow when poured, but noted that each individual grain does not adhere to these properties, therefore making them solids, not fluids. Our homework task this evening is to take a look around our homes to see if we can find more examples of small solids that together can take on certain properties of fluids. Not sure where to start? Looking in a kitchen pantry is a great place to explore!
*****
Agenda items:
1. Many thanks to everyone who generously contributed to our SOUPer Bowl! A final count of all donated items will be completed and submitted tomorrow at noon. (So, if you missed out and wanted to slip in a few more cans before the final count, that would be totally great!)
2. Calcul mental Section B - tomorrow
3. An example of a solid that shows some properties of fluids - tomorrow
4. Finishing up percents booklet and other Math items - tomorrow at 12:15.
Have a great afternoon! :)

Thursday re-cap
Hello learning friends!
Today was a great Thursday!
We started the day by putting Math and Art together to create a unique masterpiece of our names! Using a series of 100-grids, we coloured in the letters of our names and then calculated the percents, fractions out of 100 and decimal numbers for each letter.
In Français, we continued with Zamboni and worked in groups to compare and contrast the Zamboni driver and the narrator's dad. We also wrote about a time when we had a lot of pressure put on ourselves and how we were able to perform under those circumstances.
We also had a very special treat this afternoon - a Talent Show! We were treated to 12 wonderful student acts
(and one teacher band!) and had the opportunity to raise money... close to $750!... for Keira's Krusade in the process. A very special congratulations to Alexis from our class who sang so beautifully during the show!
Bravo, Alexis!
Wishing you all a very wonderful weekend! :)
P.S. Please see previous post for weekend agenda items. In addition, please note that fun lunch order forms were sent home Wednesday and are due back (with payment) to school by Tuesday of next week. Bon appetit! :)

Hello friends of learning!
Here's a quick look at what we kept us busy at school this morning:
In Math, we continue working with percents, with a focus on representing them in a variety of ways. Today we created a floor plan of a house and two versions of a park layout using specific percentages to represent a list of required features.
In Français, we continue reading our Zamboni text. In Chapter 4 we learn about one of the boys' FANATICal mom and are introduced to the Zamboni driver for the first time. The chapter ends with the boy entering the Zamboni for the first time to discover "la machine a rêves." La machine a rêves?!
We also had a work period for CFOO #11 - Les opinions. CFOO presentations will be Wednesday, April 25.
Finally in Science, we worked in groups of 4 to classify different objects (written on cards) as either solids or fluids. We used a Venn diagram to help with our sorting. Everyone in our group had to agree where the objects should be placed before writing them down. If there was debate, we had to work to come to a consensus or write the item outside of the Venn diagram for further discussion later on.

Happy Monday!
We had a busy morning of learning this morning!
In Science, we learned that we can use the term "fluids" to describe both liquids (like water) and gases (like air). We also learned that fluids have 5 unique properties, including: fluids flow and fluids take the form of their container. We watched THIS BILL BYE VIDEO to further solidify our understanding.
In Français, we continued with our Zamboni novel study. In Chapter 3, we meet the narrator's mother for the first time and learn a bit more about the narrator's life as a result.
Finally, in Math, we continue to work with percents. Today we watched a short clip about percents
(click HERE to see it!) and continued working in our percents booklets. We are working to see the connection between percents, fractions out of 100 and decimal numbers.

Friday!
We had a great day dressed in white (Go Jets!) and saying "Cheese!" for the camera (team photos).
We also had the chance to *squeeze* in some learning, too.
In Math, we worked in pairs to solve different Math questions using 0-9 number tiles.
Mme McKenzie and Mme Page were also with us during Math this morning!
Our brains worked SO hard to solve all the different expressions.
In Français, after reading independently for 10 minutes, we continued with Zamboni, the short novel we are currently studying. Today we added 4 new words to our vocabulary and made a text-to-self connection by discussing whether or not we are obligated to listen to our parents' advice.
In Science, we continue to discuss what water and air have in common. So far we have noted that:
1. Water and air flow.
2. Water and air can exert pressure.
3. Water and air will take the shape of its container.
Our discussion today started touching upon how hot air rises and cold air falls. I mentioned that we can sense this when we open our freezers at home (or perhaps at the grocery store) - we should feel the cold air on our feet first since cold air falls (and if the temperature difference is big enough, we can often see the cold air from the freezer fall when the freezer door is first opened).
Science is everywhere! :)

Apples and wooden cubes
We were happy to have Mme Page working with us again this morning. Our 3-act task this morning involved calculating how many wooden cubes would equal the mass of an apple.
(You can see the question here : https://gfletchy.com/the-apple/)
We all had different ways of approaching the question, but were all successful arriving at the answer (and being able to explain our through process, too!)
Good work, everyone!

We Need Your Help!
Did you know...
* More than 64 000 Manitobans receive food from food banks each month?
* Close to half of the Manitobans to receive food from food banks are children?
* That Winnipeg Harvest shares food through the Manitoba Association of Food Banks and through nearly 400 agencies (including soup kitchens, food banks and youth programs) to distribute food
to hungry families all over Manitoba?
What better way to support our local food bank than by donating non-perishable food items to our SOUPer Bowl?
Donations are being accepted through to April 25. Please give as generously as you are able.

If the World Were a Village...
Happy Friday, learning friends!
We started our day in Math with a short video, "If the World Were a Village."
We learned how the world's nationalities, languages, food, ages (and more!) would all be presented if the world's population were scaled down to 100 people.
After we finished watching the video and filling out our sheets, we began to represent the data in tables and diagrams. We learned that when comparing things to a group of 100, we can easily determine the percent of each category. This will be the starting point for a new unit on percents, fractions and decimals.
In Français today, we began our novel study on the book, "Zamboni" written by François Gravel.
We will be studying the novel as a full class, listening to Mme Careen read as we follow along. The study of each chapter will allow us to predict and share what we read, add new vocabulary to our repertoire (and our word wall) and make text connections to our own lives as well as other texts we may have read. Stay tuned to find out all about the young goal tender, the Zamboni and the Zamboni's special secret!
Have a great weekend!

Today in Math, we worked in groups at the white boards to figure out the following problem:
In how many ways can 105 be expressed as the sum of at least two consecutive positive integers?
We were quick to find the first solution of 52 + 53, and then from there, each group had different approaches
as to how to move forward. We were collectively able to find 6 possible solutions to this question within our

Fraction splats!
Happy Tuesday, learning friends!
We were happy to have Mme Page back with us in Math today. We started with a review of what we already know about fractions and then she introduced us to fraction splats!
We started by determining the value of this picture:
Part of the picture is covered and we have to determine what value is being covered by the splat.
We also need to be able to explain our reasoning of how we arrived at our answer.
One strategy would be to 'count up' to the answer. So, we can 2 1/4 and our goal is 4.
We can add 1 whole to get to 3 1/4 and then we need to add 3/4 more to get to 4. Cool!
Here's another one to try:

Based on the three 'wholes' and the four quarters, the total value is 4.
And then... SPLAT!

We are on a mission to collect as many non-perishable food items as we can get!
Throughout the month of April, the Grade 6 and 7 students will be going head-to-head to see which Grade level will collect the most food items for Winnipeg Harvest!
Donations can be brought in to our homeroom (Room 208) anytime between now and April 25!
Please give as generously as you are able!
Many thanks! :)

It's great to be back! :)
Happy Monday, friends of learning! April is here!
We are happy to be back together, ready for a great week of learning!
After taking some time to share what kept us busy over the break, we reviewed, in Math, what we now know
about les "nombres entiers," in preparation for a short assessment this coming Wednesday.
In Science, we prepared for and completed the first test of the Science experiment, "Le volume des béchers et une bougie." We are testing to see how much time a candle will stay lit when covered with different sizes of beakers. We will repeat the experiment twice more in order to ensure our results are reasonable. We will then work on graphing the results and writing our conclusions. Please ask me about my hypothesis and what I noticed about the first set of data collected today in class.
Looking forward to a great week! :)
