Thursday!

Happy Thursday!
We were happy to welcome Mme Alex from WISE (Women In Science and Engineering) to our classroom this morning! We learned about Electricity and had the opportunity to build different types of circuits using Snap Circuit sets. We also built a basic motor using objects we could easily find at home: a battery, safety pins, a rubber band, a thin wire and magnets. So fun!

In Math, we continued learning about positive and negative integers (les nombres entiers). We also put our artistic skills to use this morning to create an ocean scene by placing certain elements at specific places on a number line. We will then use these pictures to answer a set of extension questions involving positive and negative numbers.

Have a great afternoon! :)

Happy Wednesday!

Hello learning friends!

We had a great morning of learning today!

In Math, we worked in groups at the white board to figure out how many times we would write the number 7 if we were to write all the numbers between 0 and 1000. We came up with some great strategies!

In French, we listened to Mme Careen read us the story, "La merveilleuse machine à se faire les amis" by Rick Bland, and then we were divided into four groups to start rehearsing a reader's theatre version of the story. We are focusing on correctly pronouncing all of the words and reading our parts with expressions.
We will practice again tomorrow and then present the play on Friday.

Have a great afternoon! :)

We were happy to have a special STEM session this afternoon!
Check out what we were up to! :)
(And thanks to Mme Champagne for taking some pics to share on our blog!)

Ordering Scholastics Online!

Great news families and friends!
You can now do all of your Scholastic shopping online! Wow!

For a step-by-step tutorial of how to get your account set-up, click HERE.
For a step-by-step tutorial of how to order once your account is set-up, click HERE.

Scholastics continues to offer many new and exciting reading titles, in both English and French, at prices that are lower than buying them in store. Also, every purchase made "gives back" by providing our classroom account with funds that are spent on books and learning resources for students to read and use here at school! It's win - win!

If you have any questions of how to set up your online account, please feel free to contact me at the school.

(The monthly paper catalogues will still be available to students, and you are still more than welcome to continue submitting your orders and payments to me at the school if that's the method you prefer!)

I will be placing my March order tomorrow (Tuesday) morning,
with April's order being placed the week of the 16th.

Happy shopping (and happy reading)!

What a great evening of learning!

It was so great to see so much learning in Room 208 this evening!
Thanks to everyone for coming and celebrating all the hard work that happens each day here at school! :)

Wednesday!

Hello, everyone!
We had a busy morning of learning today!

In Mathé, we continued with our new unit on "les nombres entiers" and today learned that "les nombres entiers" can be both positive and negative and continue on to infinite (as seen on a number line - "une droite numérique").
We also watched a short video about negative numbers. The video shared some tips about how to compare positive and negative integers. It also gave examples of where we might see both positive and negative integers in everyday life.

In Science, we continued working on our write-ups for the experiments we are designing and in Français we did our final revisions for our "qui suis-je?" haiku and submitted them to Mme Careen in Showbie. Our final copies will be posted on the bulletin board in class for you to see this evening! We can't wait to share our writing with you! :)

See you this evening!

Looking forward to seeing everyone this evening for our Celebration of Learning!
No need to sign up, just stop by the school anytime between 4:45 - 7:00.
See you soon! :)

Tuesday!

We had a busy morning of learning today!

In Math, we worked at the white boards to save two different problems involving placing numbers in a certain order to find a specific sum. We were then tasked with creating our own Math question to stump others.

In Français, we continued working on our "Le chandail de hockey" haiku poems and are excited to share them with you tomorrow evening.

In Science, we continued designing our own experiments as part of our Tomatosphere extension activity. We need to consider what our goal/problem is and write a specific list of materials and steps to ensure that our experiment will be replicated the same way each time someone else completes it. The final planning drafts of our experiments are due Thursday.

A special Sc.hum post from Mme Gonzales!

Hello learning friends!
Mme Gonzales asked me to post some important information for an upcoming Sc.hum assessment.
Please read below for everything you need to know! :)

Here is a study guide for the formal evaluation that students will be writing on Thursday, March 15th. We watched a short video and listened to a radio program that helped students to better understand an important piece of our history. Students could re-watch or listen to the two programs to help study for the test. Below those links are the two questions that will be on the test. I will be removing the notes we took together from the wall on the day of the test. Students will be able to bring and use their study notes to help them the day of the test.
* CBC video documentary: Chinese Immigrants Not Welcome Anymore
A short documentary talking about the hardships faced by the Chinese immigrants.

http://www.cbc.ca/archives/entry/chinese-immigration-not-welcome-anymore

* CBC Radio program: Glenbow Museum Controversy

A radio program talking about the Canadian Pacific railway exhibit at the Glenbow Museum and their lack of attention paid to the Chinese immigrant workers.

http://www.cbc.ca/archives/entry/chinese-immigration-railroad-exhibit-controversy

Happy Friday!

We were busy at work this morning in both Français and Science.

In Français, we got to work on our "Qui suis-je" haiku poems, based on someone or something from the book Le chandail de hockey. After brainstorming, we wrote our rough draft and started making revisions. We need to make sure we respect the 5 - 7 - 5 syllable pattern. Our next steps on Monday will be to continue reading our own poem and then conferencing and revising our work with a least 2 friends before doing a final spelling/grammar check online. Our final draft will be typed up in Keynote, where we will have a chance to choose colours and images to represent our haiku. Our work will be on display for you to see next Wednesday at conferences.
We can't wait for you to "guess who" with our haiku!

In Science, we started designing our own experiment as part of our Tomatosphere Extension activity. Working independently or with a partner, we need to identify an independent variable we would like to test and then design an experiment in order to test it. We do not have to carry the experiment through to the end; we are responsible to design the first 4 steps: "But," "Hypothèse," "Matériaux" and "Méthode."
We need to make sure our steps are specific and written clearly to ensure everyone who follows them will be able to complete the experiment successfully.
We will have 2 more work periods next week before handing in our experiments to Mme.

Agenda items:

1. CFOO #9 "Créativité" - Thursday, March 15
2. March Scholastic orders - due Thursday, March 15
3. Haiku (FC) and Experiment design (SC) - to be worked on in class and completed by Wednesday, March 14.
4. All missing/incomplete tasks are now past due. Students will be asked to come in over the noon hour next week to work to ensure they are up to date by the end of Term 2. This includes students who may have missed an assessment or task due to being away.

Have a great weekend!

Wednesday!

Happy Wednesday!
We were happy to welcome Mme Page to our Math classroom today. She had us doing a Math question about Chicken McNuggets! Who knew Math could be found when we're going ordering a meal?

In Science, we started graphing our Tomatosphere results and learned how we can represent 2 sets of data on the same graph by using a legend. We are also continuing our discussion about independent and dependant variables and how it is important to ensure they are properly placed on the axes when graphing. We will use this information when starting our Design Process assignment later this week.

A Snowy Monday!

The weather outside was snowy, but inside we were warm and cozy and busy learning!

In Math, we worked in randomized groups of 2 and challenged ourselves with "les grattes-ciels."

In Français, we took some time to read, finish off our Le chandail de hockey resumés and comprehension questions and watch an episode of ONIVA.

We will jump back into our regular routine tomorrow when we welcome back the rest of our classroom friends!

Have a great afternoon! :)

Have a Great Weekend!

We worked very hard on our Science assessments this mornings and also took some time to work through 2 different Math word problems using the order of operations as our strategy. Students also had a chance to work through the list of overdue work, with many students now coming one step closer to being
caught up in all three subjects!

The coming two weeks will keep us just as busy as we continue with: graphing and experimental variables in Science, PEDMAS and problem-solving in Math and reading and a fun haiku-writing activity in Français.

Have a great weekend, everyone!
