We had a busy morning of learning today!
In Mathé, we were challenged with a tricky mental math strategy that had our brains working overtime. We were challenged to "think about money" when solving questions such as: 24 x 5, 25 x 16. Hmmm. How does it all work? Let's break it down, question by question.
Let's start with 24 x 5.
Twenty-four nickels... It's easier to think of dimes, since we already know a shortcut of multiplying by 10.
24 nickels is 24/2 or 12 dimes.
The answer is 120.
Now let's try 25 x 16.
16 quarters... It's easier to think of dollars. (And we know that there are 4 quarters in 1 dollar).
24 quarters is 24/4 or 6 dollars.
The answer therefore is 600.
This strategy was very frustrating for most of us, since we are being asked to divide one of the factors in the equation instead of multiplying both factors together to come up with an answer.
It is certainly not an easy strategy to grasp at first, but sticking with it and trying a variety of questions is what will bring us to our AHA moment.
Still don't see it? Try the questions: 5 x 28, 5 x 44, 25 x 12 and 36 x 25. What patterns do you notice?
What shortcuts can you take and why?
