We made it! The last Friday of 2017!

Greetings, learning friends!
What a wonderfully cozy day we had today!

We started our morning with our "Le Grinch" reader's theatre.
We all read so well, with such grinch-tastic expression! Bravo!

Group 2

Group 3

Group 4

After our presentation, we played holiday-themed Scattergories and Grinchématiques! So fun!
(The Grinch-Math challenge all happened so fast Mme couldn't even get a picture!)

Before heading off for our special activities, we took time to enjoy a beautiful, delicious treat!

Aren't these cupcakes just incredible?! Many wonderful thanks to Peggy-Lee and her Mom for bringing in such a yummy, festive treat to share!

We spent period 4 and the afternoon periods rotating through special last day activities. As a class we had the chance to: do a tech scavenger hunt or play Kahoot, play in the gym, do a holiday craft, do yoga and play board games. What a great way to celebrate togetherNESS before heading off for the holidays! :)

Wishing you all a very wonderful and restful winter break.
Best wishes for a happy and healthy new year!

1 more sleep!

Happy Thursday everyone!
It's hard to believe that there is only one more sleep until Winter Break! Wow!
Here's a quick look at what we were up to this morning.

We started our day with our 5th CFOO presentation! Today we were sharing our opinions on: restaurants, websites, stores, movies, TV shows and even ourselves!
Our presentation skills are improving with each presentation and we are definitely raising the bar when it comes to incorporating visual aids into our presentation pieces. Great work, team!

After CFOO, we completed our Mental Math Assessment, "Think in 25c" and then got to work on a very special secret Math coordinate picture. Hmmmm.

At first we were stumped, trying to guess just what it might be. But as we added more and more coordinates, the picture began to appear!

It's the Grinch! Ha! Math Art is SO fun!

A busy Wednesday!

Hello friends of learning!
Let's take a look at what we were up to this morning!

We had a special treat in math this morning - we got to do a special 12 Days of Christmas question... in English! 😄 Working in randomized groups at the white board, we first figured out how many items we would receive throughout the 12 days of Christmas, and then, using a special price list, we had to calculate the total cost for the 12 days of gifts. 5 golden rings and 12 drummers drumming are NOT cheap! :)

In Français, we were very happy to welcome Mme Buckwold and Mme Banks to our classroom.
We started with a celebration of our writing, and then introduced the writing process of our "La paix" poems. We were divided into two groups, one staying in Room 208 to read to Mme Buckwold, with the other group reading to Mme Banks in Room 207 (Thanks, M. Sorowkowski!).
Our poems were very personal to us and both Mmes learned a lot about us from listening to us read our writing.
We all presented very well, reading with volume and expression.

For the last part of the morning together, we worked in groups to practice our special Grinch Reader's Theatre.
The story is divided into 4 parts, with each group responsible for presenting one scene.

In each group there is one Grinch and a series of narrators who will tell the story.
We will present our Grinch Reader's Theatre Friday morning!

Friday!

Happy Friday, friends of learning! :)

We had a great morning of learning today!

In Mathé, after learning our new Mental Math strategy, "Pense à l'argent" we took time to review for our upcoming Math assessment and then used our coordinate skills to get artistic! We can connect a series of coordinates to create many different shapes... even a snowman and a gingerbread man!

In Français, we started our class by listening to the story, "Si j'avais un requin." This story ties in nicely with what we are currently learning in Science, as it includes the characteristics of what makes a shark a part of the "poisson" group. (And, did you know, if you invited a shark to your BBQ, he would eat 5000 sausages and then not eat again for 2 weeks! Oh my!)

After reading together as a class, we continued working on our "La paix" poems. Many of us have now finished our good copies, with many others not far behind. If we are not ready to hand in our good copies to Mme on Monday, she will have her room open over the noon hour and will work with us to ensure we are successful with publishing our work.

To finish off our great morning of learning, Mme Champagne came to work with us again! Today's goal was to write a summary of the text, "Tout sur les tomates." We are using a new graphic organizer to help us plan and organize our thoughts to ensure the summary we write includes the main ideas of the text. Going through "les 4 fantastiques" each time we read a text ensures we have a complete understanding of the text's message. Once these steps are mastered, we will be able to apply them to any text in any subject! What an amazing thing! :)

Happy Tuesday!

Hello everyone!

Here's a quick look at what we were up to in Math today in 208!

In Math, we were putting our adding skills to work by adding up the total of different grocery items. Upon entering the class, we each had a different selection of food items waiting for us at our spots. Then, working in randomized groups, we first estimated each of our totals and then calculated the actual costs of our 'meal.' Working in groups allowed us to talk about our estimation and adding strategies and share any ideas and Math shortcuts we had!

Agenda items:
1. Good copies of our "La paix" poems due Friday.
(We will have 2 more periods of work time to get them completed between now and Friday).

Happy Friday!

Hello learning friends!
Day 2s are always a quick morning for us in Room 208; only 2 periods before heading off to PA and then lunch! Wow!

Despite our short time together this morning, we did pack in a lot of learning. Here's what we were up to!

Our tomato plants continue to grow, with new seeds germinating every day.
Group G now has 18 germinated plants.
Group H is not too far behind with 14.

After making our daily Science observations, we played Math battleship to practice our coordinate skills!

In Français, we continued our "Tout sur les tomates" reading with the wonderful Mme Champagne. We are using the reading strategy, "les 4 fantastiques" to: predict, question, clarify and summarize what we are reading.

Reading non-fiction texts in French is tricky because the level of vocabulary is often at quite a high level (scientists enjoy using big, fancy words!) so following these four steps and taking the time to do the word work involved really helps us grow our vocabulary base and deepen our understanding of the text. Thanks, Mme Champagne! :)

Agenda items:
1. Calcul mental evaluation "Arrondis et ajuste" - Monday
2. Report card envelopes and verification emails due as soon as possible, please!

Have a great weekend! :)

Thursday, 7 December 2017

Thursday!

Hello everyone!
We had a great morning of learning today!

In Math, we continue to work with new mental math strategies as well as applying multiple strategies to solve one equation. How many different ways can you solve a question such as 48 + 37  or  118 + 62? We are also continuing our work with coordinates and will soon see the transfer of these skills into Science.

Speaking of Science, we are keeping up with our daily tomato observations and have seen a quite a few new seeds germinate this week. G continues to have a higher number of germinated seeds compared to H, with today's tallies being 18 vs 13. We have 10 more days left in our observation period before we can submit our results to Tomatosphere to find out which group is which.

In Français, our daily 10 minutes of reading this week has us diving into our classroom library to see what titles are peeking our interest. "Garfield" and "Mission:Adoption" are quite popular, along with "Journal Minecraft" and
"100 faits épeurants..."
We have also made great progress with our "La paix" poems and took time in class today to celebrate the wonderful writing that we are producing. We are pushing ourselves to write detailed texts using a rich and varied vocabulary and the results are incredible! Our next steps after we are finished with our rough copies will be to conference with 2 different classmates before beginning our good copies. Mme has asked us to pay special attention to correctly conjugating the verbs linking to each of the 5 senses (we can refer to our verb anchor chart to help us) and ensuring our féminin/masculin articles are correct (la paix (not le paix); mon papa (not ma papa) etc.)
Writing it French is NOT easy, but we are increasing our writing stamina and working towards excellence each time we pick up our pen and start writing! Bravo! :)
